Entfaltung is German for unfolding. I begin with the pendulum drawings of Swiss healer-artist Emma Kunz (1892–1963) and unfold them out of the flat page into space and time. What Kunz fixed on graph paper, I set in motion. It is a living drawing, computed in real time. I pre-render nothing, and it never repeats.

Two-dimensional works on paper, drawn with a hybrid process that combines a mechanical plotter with pencil lines filled in by hand. A continuation of the pendulum drawings by Emma Kunz. Channeled from a large language model: our collective unconscious.

Entfaltung

Points on an octagonal outline and inside it are joined by two families of lines, each drawn with its own pen, and triangles point up and down at the centre. Larger faces overlap, each drawn with a single pen. Each line cuts a small gap into the lines underneath it, so where two lines cross, the upper one runs on and the lower one breaks. The stacking order gives the drawing depth. The plotter drew the lines in pen, and I added pencil by hand.
