Showreel

Strategies, 2010 a sequel to [Showreel](https://harm.work/work/showreel), documents the process of making collages. Screenshots, images and other found footage were collected over the course of two months and combined with rewritten phrases of advice given by business experts, martial arts gurus, software developers and Jacques Derrida. The background track was made by Van den Dorpel in 2002 and was never used before, for anything particular.

Created on the occasion of a group exhibition at the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Roma, curated by Valentina Tanni.

Strategies

The visual content of Showreel, 2009, was derived from experiments with a screen capture software which posted images directly to a website. The software was developed by Van den Dorpel and used by him and a group of friends like a surf club. Upon recognising an associative narrative, showreel became an anthropological investigation, as well as a documentation of the process of making sculptures, the 3–d renders of which also appear in the video.

A set of four short videos that sit between photograph and film. The title names the effect literally: the small breeze a codec makes. Each work is a still photograph in which only the parts that might be alive have been set moving, not by filming them but by pushing them through a low resolution compression algorithm.

2024 remake of the 2008 Flash animation using HTML + CSS.

Remastered to 4K in 2025, duration 8 minutes. Edition 3+1AP. Could be installed alongside a noise generator playing soft pink noise.
